58 state parks at risk now! This one’s coming from the legislature, not unexpectedly. Although the Governor’s budget calls for increased fees to help offset shortfalls in the DEP budget, the legislature is discussing a plan submitted by DEP to cut costs by closing 58 state parks mid-week for the fiscal year. The criteria? Parks without campgrounds or cabins will close. Never mind the families who take a walk around the park during the week, as my sister does at Rainbow Springs, or the travelers who stop at a park for a hike or a history lesson and find it closed. Not good news, folks. I’d appreciate it if you got in touch with your legislators IMMEDIATELY to voice your displeasure with their plan. I already did this morning. Here’s how to find yours.
Thanks to environmental reporter Bruce Ritchie for the heads-up on this one! Check out his blog, Florida Environments, where he broke the story. Please share this one!

How about all the people that they are trying to send to the unemployment lines? They need to clean up and clean out the offices in Tallahassee first. That would be the most cost effective place to start. Ask them to justify all the positions that they want to protect. Most of them are useless positions that are no longer needed. Average salary for the Central Level is $54K, the District Level is $42K and the Field Level they want to thin out is $20K. Enough said.
