One of my favorite getaways in Florida, the historic coastal city of Apalachicola is renowned for its oysters – not this time of year, however, given the lack of R in the month
It’s a walkable downtown, easy to stroll and explore. One of the most recent hikes I’ve added to the site is a short and sweet walk at the very edge of town – the estuarine edge – as far north as you can go on Market Street, past the marina. The Apalachicola National Estuarine Research Reserve encompasses much of the floodplain where river meets bay, and there’s a sweet little nature center (open weekdays only) about to undergo a major facelift. I’m hoping, of course, nothing radical happens to the adjoining trail. It starts right across from the center, and is one of my favorites in the Panhandle thanks to its habitat diversity in a short stretch of trail. Check it out!
