A wildlife that started in the vicinity of Turner River Road on April 22 has consumed more than 20,000 acres of the Big Cypress Swamp and forced road closures along I-75 / Alligator Alley to the east of SR 29, and SR 29 itself. The Fire Prairie Trail, Bear Island Unit, and Deep Lake Unit are closed to the public as firefighters continue to work a burnout against the blaze, which is 20% contained at this point. Road closures and smoke make access to the Florida Panther National Wildlife Refuge and Fakahatchee Strand Preserve State Park difficult.
