Land of the Ancients

Yours truly in a cypress hollowMost Floridians have heard about the Big Tree: The Senator, the showpiece of Big Tree Park. Named for Senator M.O. Overstreet, who donated this massive cypress and the land around it to the people of Seminole County, the tree towers more than 129 feet tall, topped off from its former granduer by a hurricane in the 1920s.

While The Senator and his companion Lady Liberty are mighty impressive, they are but the tip of the discoveries you’ll make at Spring Hammock Preserve, a 1,500-acre natural area along the shores of Soldier Creek and Lake Jesup.

I too love this area. I live on Sheoah Circle, in the Highlands and love walking in these woods. I have noticed the crane and heavy equipment cutting a path into my “back yard” commencing on 17-92 & General Hutchinson. If they continue thru the preserve and they are in deeply already, they will come out in my back porch. First, it pains me to see the destruction of this tiny bit peace and quiet, second do you know why and what for?

I’m am very worried this path is wide enough for ,God forbid, a “road”. I appreciate any information and your time. I did not know where to go for info, but I think you appreciate this area as much or more than I do.

    Thank you
