Today was our Florida Trail effort to get Marion County residents out hiking during the Marion County Springs Festival weekend, and I led a hike out at Carney Island Park in Ocklawaha. I only had a few takers but they were good company. When Rob and I arrived, we sat in the car and watched a mama and baby deer work their way past us, getting spooked a few minutes later when a jogger, obvilious to the natural tableau, ran up to the trailhead to “tag” it and run back to the beach parking lot.

I would appreciate instructions on how to locate this park.
    Thanks. Marcel Davignon

  • Follow CR 25 east from Belleview (intersection of US 441 / 301 / 27, CR 25 and SR 484) to Ocklawaha … you’ll see the signs directing you towards a road on the right that leads into the park. If you get to the light in Ocklawaha, you’ve gone too far.

Are you open for easter on sunday 3/23 ?

  • Since it is a county park, and there is a fee box when you enter, it doesn’t take anyone to “run” the front gate, so I would guess it would be open. I would suggest calling Marion County Parks & Recreation (352-671-8560) on a weekday to find out for sure.

Is this a good place to have a birthday party? Does it have access to water for the kids to play in?

  • Sandra Friend

Yes, there is a small beach on the lake, and great places to play under the large live oaks. I would certainly consider it a nice place for an outdoor birthday party. It’s breezy, too, since it’s a peninsula. Enjoy!

IS THERE ANYWHERE AROUND THE PARK TO STAY IN A MOTORHOME?
WHERE IS THE CLOSEST RV PARK ?

  • Sandra Friend

Nelson’s Outdoor Resort is probably the closest RV park to Carney Island: http://www.nelsonsoutdoorresort.com/.

Remember their is no beer allowed here I was told by a really rude bald man with a tatoo on the side his head and then told an additional 4 times including him again,I got it the first time! I have been here many times but this happened infront of co-workers who all thought it was wrong and all drove from Gainsville to hear it, I live close but will never be back our next get together is at Gator Joes which is sad because this was our third time getting together at the park!Their also was a threat of a 42 dollar fine I speant more than that on food give me a break!
