Back from the Big O

It takes two hands to handle an Okee-burgerWe couldn’t have asked for better weather this year for the Big O Hike: chilly nights and blue skies with temperatures hovering around 70 F most days. As I’m juggling updates to my South Florida: An Explorer’s Guide and the Florida Trail Official Guide, I alternated between hiking and researching over the course of the week, introducing my fellow hikers to the Okee-burger at Pat’s Lakeside Cafe in Okeechobee, to Arnold’s Wildlife Rehab Center near Okeechobee, and to the Clewiston Museum, a fascinating repository of regional history and fossils.

I kept to my usual practice of staying offline while camping, which provided some well-deserved unplugged relief. This year I took few photos but concentrated on shooting video and capturing audio, so I’ll share some of that soon. Meanwhile, here’s Ron - one of our faster “contrarian” hikers who helped with key swaps - and his whopping Okee-burger!
