Florida Hikes podcast: Green Cay Wetlands

Green Cay WetlandsEpisode 005: A Walk at Green Cay Wetlands (18:43)
Earlier this month, I stayed with my friends Ted and Trudy Winsberg on their farm while I was participating in the Diabetes Walk event in West Palm Beach, and I had a chance to walk with Ted along the boardwalks of Green Cay Wetlands one morning. This spectacular wetlands park is their legacy to the people of Florida. Not long ago, it was part of their bell pepper farm. Now it’s a re-created Everglades habitat, a haven for birds and hikers alike. This episode is an edited version of a walk through the preserve with Ted.

Florida Hikes podcast: Florida Trail, Gold Head

Hiking at Gold Head BranchEpisode 004: Florida Trail at Mike Roess Gold Head Branch State Park (18:59)
This podcast is a little different. I’ve had it in mind for months, since I received a stereo digital recorder for Christmas and immediately took it out hiking with me on New Years’ Day. The tough part was editing down the sound from the entire hike so it wouldn’t be the length of the hike!

My friend Phyllis (aka ShortCut) is still working on her end to end hike (as am I). She needed to cover Gold Head and Etoniah, so we headed up there for the holidays and I just let the recorder run. This is a linear hike from the ranger station to the south gate, a 3.5 mile segment of the Florida Trail.

Florida Hikes podcast: A Day in Bradwell Bay

Hiking at Bradwell BayEpisode 003: A Day in Bradwell Bay (11:31)
Walk with me on a squishy, splashy day hike on the Florida Trail through a dense hardwood swamp in the Bradwell Bay Wilderness Area, south of Tallahassee.

This particular hiking experience has special meaning for me, since it launched my outdoor writing career in Florida and my series of Florida hiking books. After writing up the trip report and posting it to an online hiking group I belong to, the AT-L, I was contacted by editor Karen Berger to provide a version for GORP.com. That interaction led to my contract for the 50 Hikes series in Florida, and to articles for Backpacker and Florida Hiker magazines. I wrote this the evening of the hike, sitting in the living room of my friend Linda “Earthworm” Patton’s house (she of BooksforHikers.com fame), and posted it to the group from my laptop. The rest, they say, is history … and I was fortunate to have such a great group and excellent leader for this hike!

Florida Hikes! podcast: Juniper Springs

Juniper SpringsEpisode 002: Juniper Springs (7:53)
One of many delightful hikes in the Ocala National Forest, the 1.4-mile round-trip Juniper Run Nature Trail at Juniper Springs Recreation Area is the state’s best for showcasing springs. Along this trail, which connects Juniper Springs and Fern Hammock Springs, you’ll see everything from a deep cavernous outflow to tiny bubblers, underwater sandstorms, and bizarre pools of turquoise and gray that look like post-modern video screens. It’s an easy walk and well worth the stop on your trip through the Ocala National Forest.

Florida Hikes! podcast: Lyonia Preserve

Me with a scrub-jay at Lyonia PreserveEpisode 001: Lyonia Preserve (5:02)
A Volusia county natural land, Lyonia Preserve has the fine distinction of being the the best place in Florida to see a Florida scrub-jay. These colorful and large birds are found nowhere else in the world but the Sunshine State. Their habitat is very specific - high, dry scrub with low trees - and extremely fragmented across the state. The scrub-jay is listed as a threatened species.  The podcast provides a description of a walk through the preserve, with directions on how to get there, and some scrub-jay calls I recorded on site.
