Since a network of sand roads crisscrosses the forest, you can day hike certain portions of the trail, best done between two vehicles. The shortest loop is Loop A, at 8.5 miles. With the exception of TR13 and TR10, forest roads require a high-clearance vehicle and/or four-wheel drive. The trails cross TR 13 numerous times.

A free map of the trail system is available from the Withlacoochee State Forest visitor center on US 41, north of Brooksville; a detailed map for backpackers, including cumulative mileages, trail features, and water sources, can be purchased from the Florida Trail Association. Backpackers should plan ahead. There are only four permanent water sources along the trail, so you may want to cache water jugs at forest road crossings before you start hiking. On the western side of the forest, you’ll hike a long distance between designated campsites. On the eastern side of the forest, Holder Mine and Mutual Mine Recreation Areas provide campgrounds with toilets, showers, and potable water; tent campers are charged a small fee. Check with the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission (www.floridaconservation.org) before hiking to avoid conflicts with deer hunting, as this is a popular general gun season destination. If you hike during any hunting season, wear an orange vest.
