Many Florida counties have Natural Lands Programs which enable taxpayers to purchase and protect undisturbed wilderness space from development. Since the concept of Natural Lands is habitat preservation, hiking tends to be the primary recreational use on Natural Lands. Both Palm Beach County and Polk County have extensive Natural Lands programs, more so than most other counties in the state, and provide access to most of their natural lands via hiking trails.
