I'm Sandy!Welcome to Florida Hikes! I'm Sandra Friend, author of eight books on Florida hiking, and  this is a work-in-progress drawing on more than 600 hikes I've done and 2,500 pages I've written about hiking Florida. Browse the articles, look for a hike near you, and check out the forum to learn more about Florida hiking. Enjoy! Don't miss the new Hike-A-Week while it's free!.

Due to budget difficulties, 19 of our 161 Florida State Parks are at risk of closing during 2009, and another 3 may be lost entirely. If you're a Floridian, please take the time to email the Governor and your legislators to voice your concerns. I've provided talking points and email links on a new blog highlighting the issues surrounding the possible state park closures. If you're a visitor who enjoys our state parks, an email to our governor would be helpful, too. If you live near one of the affected state parks and would like to share your story, This e-mail address is being protected from spam bots, you need JavaScript enabled to view it about being a blogger on this site.

I've posted short vignettes of each of the parks, with Google Maps so you can find them. You'll find information about each of the parks under Parks: State Parks at Risk . Here's an overview map of where they are located.

  • Time for the Wednesday Walks
Every year, Rachael and Lou Augspurg lead a series of hikes somewhere in Central Florida for Florida Trail Association members. These day hikes are extremely popular, as they help you knock off a section hike of the FT or learn more about a bunch of trails in one particular area. This...
  • FT Kissimmee River Adventure
Last week, I had the pleasure of a LONG hike. I was part of a group led by Tropical Trekker Lori Burris on a backpacking trip up the Kissimmee River from Lake Okeechobee to Bluff Hammock. It’s been a while since I’ve spent that many days out on the trail,... (application/x-shockwave-flash 0.05MB )

On February 7, 2009, enjoy a hike along a spectacular portion of the Florida Trail along the Suwannee River between Big Shoals and Little Shoals.

It’s taken years to complete the land acquisition along the south shore of the Suwannee River to move the Florida Trail off the backroads west of...
