Florida is the birthplace of the National Wildlife Refuge (NWR) system, where President Theodore Roosevelt dedicated the Pelican Island NWR in 1903. There are now more than 20 National Wildlife Refuges in Florida alone. Most (but not all) provide access via interpretive trails. St. Marks NWR is the only refuge that permits overnight camping for backpackers (along the Florida Trail), but you must obtain a permit in advance before backpacking. NWR hours are from dawn to dusk unless otherwise posted.
