Treating water 2008/05/21 17:28 Karma: 0
I'm not too thrilled with the idea of drinking ANY groundwater in South Florida. I trust the filters to eliminate anything living and I can always boil, but I'm a bit paranoid about Industrial/Agricultural runoff here in South Florida. Does anyone have any experience with this or guidelines as what to avoid?

The area I'm specifically talking about is the Dupris/Corbit area just East of Lake O.

Thanks,
Mike

I did the OTL several years ago and used a Pur Scout filter. Did not have any problems. However, I used the same filter out on the FT Seminole section, which follows dikes from Big Cypress Seminole Reservation to Clewiston, and got sick, sick, sick. More concentrated runoff there. OTL is much safer in that regard. If you're mistrustful, cache water. And trust water from grassy prairies over canals, at least it gets some natural filtering from the periphyton.

I've used The Canadian version of Aqua Mira for all my hikes in the last few years, including all of the FT south of Avon Park. Never had a problem. I've also seen people drink out of the canals while the banks were being sprayed and not die. Guess it's a matter of constitution too.
