Hi to all! I just wanted to introduce myself. I moved to Florida 3 years ago from Indiana. It's like a different world here. I can't say I like the hot summers (as I sun burn easily), but I do love the Florida winters.

I've always liked a good long walk but with a young family and a full time job I didn't have time. The kids are teens now and life has slowed down some.

I've visited and hiked a few of the state parks in my area, and my husband and I are planning our first big backpack hike in October on the FT in Osceola National Forest (3 days, 2 nights). We've begun purchasing equipment and are trying to keep it as light as possible. Any advice out there?

Thanks!

Welcome to Florida! As you might have guessed, this is NOT our hiking season. Smart move to hold off on backpacking til at least October if you want some heat and insect relief.

Remember, weight = comfort. Go light if you are comfortable with ditching comfort items. I have a single wall, single person tent that uses my Lekis for tent poles ... it only weights 2 lbs but is claustrophobic, so I'd rather tradeoff for a heavier tent for an overnighter / group outing, but the tent is worth its discomfort for less weight on a longer hike.

Visit www.backpackinglight.com for great advice on trimming gear weight. Hopefully some of our long distance hikers will chime in!

Cheers, Sandy

If you haven't already purchased a tent I would recommend a look at the Sierra Designs Lightning and the MSR Hubba Hubba. The advantage of both of these for FL hiking is the ability to put up just the bug net. We often don't need the rain fly overnight but it sure is nice to keep the mosquitoes et al at bay. For two of you the Hubba Hubba also has the advantage of access zips on both sides.
