Webshots Photo AlbumOriginally, this trip was going to be the completion of our
previous trip to Torreya, which was aborted when my son decided he was ready to go home. I was going to start at the picnic area, hike down towards Rock Creek, around the loop to Rock Bluff, camp overnight, and then hike out to the entrance the next morning. I needed another vehicle, though, and couldn't get anyone else to go with us, so I changed the plan to a simple in and out to Rock Bluff from the main entrance.
When I called to make the reservations for the trip, the ranger recognized my name. She said, "Oh, Mr. xxxxx! You're not bringing the little one with you again, are you?"
I laughed and said, "Yeeaaah..."
"Well, don't walk him to death this time, okay?"
Sheesh. The little runt has complete strangers feeling sorry for him. She called back the next day and told me that since we left early the night before we wouldn't have to pay this time. I tried to tell her that that wasn't necessary, but she insisted.
The trip itself wasn't highly eventful, although you wouldn't be able to tell that from the length of my
official trip report. The main highlights were playing on the rocks by the river, hiking over Logan Hill to find water because the creek near Rock Bluff is dry, toasting marshmallows, reading aloud, and lying in the tent in the wee hours of the morning listening to the sounds of a raucous party taking place on sandbar by the river. My son missed the latter, fortunately, since he slept like a rock all night. He didn't even wake up when it sounded like someone was emptying the clip of a semi-automatic pistol. I didn't have any phone numbers I could call to get someone out to shut down the party, so I just laid there and fantasized about clearing their camp with a few well placed shots from a sniper rifle. Sometime after 4am it finally wound down.
I was up by 7am, and we managed to break camp quickly and head out. On the way out, I contemplated yelling down to wake up the partyers, but decided they might not be out of ammunition. Rough night aside, it was a fun trip. DS had a great time climbing on the rocks, helping me filter water, toasting marshmallows, etc. He's ready to go again, which is a good sign. Here are a few teasers from the photo album:
