Go landfill hiking in Palm Beach County

Years ago, I had a wonderful time hiking with a bunch of friends at Grassy Waters Preserve, a nature center with trails north and south of Northlake Blvd in northern Palm Beach County. At the time, the fellow who led the hike mentioned that plans were in the works for hiking trails to be built around the county landfill near Jog Road and 45th Street. I was incredulous, but … here’s the story in the Palm Beach Post! If anyone’s done this trail system, I’d love your comments before I make a stop there myself.

I did it late last year and it was fantastic. Saw more wildlife than in any other trails I’ve hiked in Palm Beach County in years. Saw several massive wild hogs, a flock of pink spoonbills, and two otters in one day.

I went to the land fill and it was beautiful, I only walked a couple of miles because I wanted to check it out before I went with my friends. A lot of birds, gators and I saw deer tracks. An alligator crossed the path in front of me, a little wierd since I was by myself. I plan to go with my friends on Tues so i’ll let you know.

I don’t understand how anyone would have a good time hiking on a landfill that contains cancer-causing chemicals. The beautiful view doesn’t seem reason enough to put your health in jeopardy.

Janice, people don’t hike ON the landfill, but within sight (and smell) of it. The county owns a rather large buffer property around the actual landfill, and they’ve put trails on it. I’ll admit it does not appeal to me!

I’ve biked it 3 times in the last 2 weeks and have seen more wildlife each time. Today was the best. Hundreds of birds, Ibis, Wood storks, Egrets, Anhingas, Spoonbills and turkey vultures. Also, some of the largest gators I’ve ever seen in Florida. Have seen a river otter and 4-5 deer on some of the trips. It’s really magnificent especilly on a bike, as you can go further and see more.
