Kirby Storter Boardwalk best introduction to Big Cypress habitats

If you’re driving from Naples to Miami and don’t have a lot of time to spare to stop and enjoy the Big Cypress National Preserve, make a point of pulling off the Tamiami Trail at the Kirby Storter wayside, 14.1 miles east of the blinker at SR 29 outside Everglades City. The boardwalk trail is a delightful introduction to Big Cypress habitats, transitioning from wet prairie into floodplain forest, pop ash swamp, cypress slough, and a flag pond. Only a mile round-trip, it’s wheelchair accessible and easy enough (with plenty of benches) for all ages and abilities. It’s out of the current wildfire zone (a good bit south of it) and is also the focus of this week’s Hike-A-Week, which Florida Hikes! subscribers receive tomorrow morning.
