Maps, tips, photos and links to trails
throughout N. America. We love to hike, to wander, to tramp.
Basically to explore. The places that intrigue us are out and beyond, taking us away from the daily grind and back to the quiet freedom and adventure that is the heritage of us all.

Welcome to the Northern California Hiking Trails blog. Iʼm John Soares, co-author of 100 Classic Hikes in Northern California, third edition and author of 75 Hikes in Californiaʼs Mount Shasta and Lassen Volcanic National Park Regions, revised edition. I did a lot of tramping and trekking in the wilderness long before I wrote the books, but doing the very enjoyable research for the hiking guides took me all over Northern California, from Santa Cruz to Crescent City, and from Mokelumne Wilderness to the Warner Mountains, Mount Shasta, and the Trinity Alps. So I have a broad perspective of the region. And a deep love for it. Iʼll share that love with you.

The overall focus of this blog is foot travel, but Iʼll also examine various facets of being outdoors, from maximizing trail-time enjoyment to details of hike updates to political, economic, social, and environmental aspects of north state trails. I also examine various stories and issues of interest to hikers.

I live near Mount Shasta in the far north of the state, about 60 miles or so south of the Oregon border, and I grew up around Redding just to the south, so Iʼll talk a bit more about Lassen Volcanic National Park and the Trinity Alps, for instance. But thereʼll be plenty on the Bay Area, the coast, and Sierra Nevada, I promise.

Blogging Area: Northern California, from Monterey Bay and Yosemite all the way to the Oregon border.

Blogging Since: July 2008

These are my stories as a volunteer member of the very active Coconino County, Arizona, Sheriff’s Search and Rescue team. We get over 100 calls per year, searching for and rescuing hikers, climbers, skiers, and so forth in our country’s second largest county, which includes the San Francisco Peaks, the Navajo Reservation, and Grand Canyon.  I also provide information about search and rescue equipment and skills.

I am a Kiwi currently living in Vancouver, BC and a mad keen trail and road runner. I started up my blog a couple of months ago as a way to keep in touch with friends and family back home and to chart my journey to the New York Marathon at the end of the year. I am raising funds for the Lance Armstrong Foundation, so am also using the blog as a means of getting word out.

Being in Vancouver I have embraced the trail running scene, which is awesome, and taking part in the Knee Knacker and Stormy trail races along with some other shorter races.

After injury forced an early retreat from my attempt at a Japan thru-hike, I returned to Australia and started this blog as consolation: a way to describe the highs and lows of my adventures over the years. Although not 100% about the outdoors, there’ll be enough reminiscence about the Appalachian and Long Trails, plus my other solo adventures in the wilds of America, Japan and Australia, to keep outdoor enthusiasts happy. My goal is to go beyond the mundane facts and figures and keep things as wry, literate and entertaining as I can manage.
