Tripped over a snake on a Florida trail? Stopped in your tracks watching one in the water? We’ve all had these moments that make us wary. The good news is that there are only six species of venomous snakes in Florida, and they’re pretty easy to identify. Especially after you take a look at this fabulous online resource.
The University of Florida presents the “List of Florida Snakes” as an educational service, with a special section just on the venomous ones. Now you can compare that hastily-snapped digital photo with their images of snakes!

Its looking very Cottonmouthy to me.
We thought so at first, but the head was not viper-shaped. Take a look at the details of the banded water snake. They are easily mistaken! The head is the big difference, along with attitude – water snakes rarely have any.
Hmmmm, looks like a FL watersnake to me
Yes you’re right they look very much like moccasins, especially juvenile moccasins because they are banded too. Adult moccasins are black and very fat. I am going hiking in Picayune Strand tomorrow! Off trail, I’ll post the pics here http://evergladesodyssey.blogspot.com/
If you are interested, its the first hike I’ve been able to do in over a year, I’m excited.
