The "Over 80" Hikers, six hikers ages 80-90 started their cross-Florida trek from Flagler Beach to Withlacoochee Bay on Friday October 27. They finished up Thursday Nov 8, with 4 hikers remaining.  This innovative program kicked off on October 6, 2007 in Bartow with over a thousand eager hikers in attendance. If you've ever wanted to explore the trails of Polk County, this is a fun way to do it. Stop in at Polk Outpost 27 (the visitor center just south of Interstate 4) for your Nature Passport, in which you keep track of the hikes you do. You can hike them yourself, or on these group hikes scheduled over the next year. Some of the hikes are on paved trails, and many are on natural surface trails, which I've detailed here. There is a geocache hidden at each trail, and as you hike, you can collect great prizes from the Friends of the Parks. The following schedule is for guided hikes along the Ten Trails:
Oct 6: Fort Fraser Trail (paved), Bartow to Lakeland
Nov 10: Lakeland Highlands Scrub, Lakeland
Dec 8: Hickory Lake Scrub, Frostproof
Jan 13: Crooked Lake Prairie, Babson Park
Feb 10: SUMICA, east of Lake Wales
Mar 8: Gator Creek Reserve, Lakeland
Apr 5: Saddle Creek Nature Trail, Lakeland
May 3: Lake Wales Trailway (paved) , Lake Wales

AUGUST 13 - At the Dunnellon City Council meeting, Ordinance 2007-09, an amendment to the Dunnellon Comprehensive Plan to add trails, was accepted after public input. The amendment adds a recreational trail plan map and provides for deadlines for trails to be created. Pedestrian-friendly linkages are planned between the Pruitt Trailhead on the Cross Florida Greenway, downtown Dunnellon, and the Withlacoochee State Trail, which will benefit the Florida Trail route through the area. |
