Ranger-led walk at Washington Oaks

Washington Oaks Gardens

Washington Oaks Gardens

On July 11, to celebrate Parks & Recreation Month, there will be a ranger-led interpretive walk through Washington Oaks Gardens State Park, and if you’ve never visited here, you’ll want to join in.

The formal gardens are a delight any time of year, but there are also several special features about the natural habitats of this state park. The maritime hammock is host to a significant amount of coontie, a native Florida plant that was once used as a source of starch. The coastline along the Mantanzas River has mangroves, which are at the upper extent of their range in the United States. And the ancient oak canopy here just shouldn’t be missed.  And then there’s the coquina beach across the street. Washington Oaks is one of the first parks I visited as a kid, and it’s always been one of my favorites. Take this opportunity to find out why for yourself! Bring a camera, sunscreen and insect repellant, and walking shoes.

The ranger-led walk is included in the regular park entrance fee of $5.00 per vehicle and will depart from the Visitor Center at 11:00 a.m. Plants will be available for purchase that day via the Friends of Washington Oaks second Saturday plant sale.
