Moorhen with nesting materials at Snake Warrior Island Natural Area

Protecting what was once the headwaters of Snake Creek and was the oldest eastern Glades settlement of the Seminoles, Snake Warrior Island Natural Area is a small urban oasis not far from I-95 in Miramar. A paved trail loops around the recreated wetlands, where the waters are busy with moorhens, wood ducks, and herons. Interpretive markers provide an incredible amount of detail about the former Seminole settlement, which sat on two islands in the marsh. As you walk, the squawks and chitters of birds accompany you. Adjoining the parking lot is a shady canopied glade of live oaks and ficus trees. Several benches provide places to rest along the circuit.
