Wildlife Management Areas Print E-mail
Written by Sandra Friend

The Florida Freshwater Fish and Wildlife Commission (FWC) oversees Wildlife Management Areas (WMAs) and Mitigation Parks throughout Florida. WMAs are generally managed for hunting, with non-consumptive recreation a secondary consideration. Hikers are welcome to utilize the forest roads within any WMA for recreation, but a complex set of rules covers the use of these areas; for information on any specific WMA, dig through the regulations posted on their website for details. Many WMAs are closed to hiking during general gun hunting season, which usually falls during optimal hiking season. Only WMAs with established hiking trails are listed in this book. Entrance fees to WMAs run $3-4 per person or $6 per carload.
